Keyword Research
The most important matter in order to have a successful website is to
research the keywords appropriately. I go out from it that you are
already familiar with what keywords are and where to put them. This is
not Search Engine Optimization 101, but rather SEO advanced 301. In
order to research your website keyword effectiveness you can hire a
service with WebPro or search Google for keyword analytical tools. You
can pay anywhere between $ 50 to $ 300 dollars.
Watch out for contracts that are not month to month. The best and most cost effective way to research your keywords is to just type them into the Google or Yahoo search engines' search box and look for the response. You will see how many results the search engine returns.
Then click on the first 10 or 20 search results on page one (only on the left side and ignore those in the shaded area - these are paid-for ads). Identify the websites that match closest your site. Take the URL over to Engineseeker under the SEO services and enter it under competitive keyword search. This will give you exactly what keywords any of these competitive sites contain. Remember, you are only paying$ 10.00 per month on Engine Seeker SEO Services and you can cancel it any time.
Content writing
In order to get found by those people who enter the search words into
the search field on the search engines, Google for instance has
developed a unique method to identify those websites that are most
relevant to the search. The search engine start with the most relevant
search results on the left side on page one, moving downwards to page
2, 3, etc... as the relevancy decreases.
For every keyword you have identified and you enter into your metatag or keyword area (in templates), you should have 3 to 5 matching words in the text of the applicable or corresponding page. You can have up to 20 pages on 1and1.com web-hosting for instance for about $ 25 every quarter. But you can have unlimited pages with 1and1.com if you upgrade very inexpensively. This means that every page can have its unique text and matching keywords.
Don't get the idea to trick the Google Search engine by putting hidden text into your content page. You will get caught and Google will demote your page. The solution is to write an honest content of the topics of interest and match up the keywords. Especially important is that you have one or maximum two different focuses that are however directly related to each other. For example, like this site, I am about finding my own job and because I know there are millions of others out there that are looking for work and want to make money, I am combining the both.
Remember, write about a topic and build you website around a topic of which you are an expert. For example, I am an expert in Search Engine Optimization and launching successfully websites. I have done it so many times the last few years. Many times there was failure involved. It was failure because I spent way to much money and still failed. And the contrary, those websites that I designed myself on the simplest of platforms (in pre-designed templates), and spent the least money on advertising ended up bringing the most traffic.
Your Website Design
I recommend that you research a hosting-service website that offers
templates of high quality. If you know how to use for example
DreamWeavers C3 or C4 Webdevelopment tools (for enrolled students
already available under $ 200.) that is great. But know this, literally
any idiot (don't mean this with disrespect) can design a website
quickly using for example www.1and1.com. It is inexpensive and user-friendly, and you don't have to put up $200 or even $ 400+ for regular non-student users.
Look for example at this website, it is designed on the Template Platform within a shared server IP Address from 1and1. You can build up to 5 websites with domain names linked for about $ 9.00 per month. And if you want unlimited pages, in excess of 20 pages each website, you can upgrade to about $ 20.00 per month, charged to your credit card every quarter.
The drawback of the 1and1 platform is that you don't have your own unshared IP Address. This means you need to get your own server rented if you want to hook up your email address for the purposes of sending out hundreds of thousands of emails per months. If you use the standards account under 1and1, you will get a serious problem with them because of spam policies. See below, under Email Lists and Emailing your newsletters...
Merchant Account Service
If you feel you have a good supplier of products or services, add a merchant account (Leaders-QuickCommerce) is a good and inexpensive one - but watch the 3 year contract). For all your purposes, you could even ask for donations since you are unemployed, if you want to, while accepting Visa, Mastercards, Discover, Amex...Also, PayPal offers merchant account services as well. Investigate carefully the pros and cons of contracts, fees, and opportunities companies offer. It is also my recommendation that you look into actual limitations and potential restrictions. For example, PayPal may freeze your cash in the account if they feel your activity threatens their interests.
If you are interested to hear more detailed information about this controversy, send me an email.
Domain Name(s)
Your domain name should be something easy to remember and should be attached to you. I have chosen my name. Fox is a great name and it is short and catchy. I want people to learn about me and I am using my name for branding purposes.
I could have used also domain names such as:
OnlineTrafficJobSearch.com, RegulatoryLocalization.com, etc... using keywords, and/or any derivatives. If your ideal domain name is taken, do not get discouraged. There are always ways to get what you want and that rather inexpensively. A domain name is not worth it to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars for.
Measure your traffic on 1and1
Measure your traffic with the tools called Stats or Statistics. You can
quickly see how many unique visitors you receive daily, even from day
one. This website started having 50 to 60 visitors daily within 1 week
of its launch. This was because of my work and my invitations to come
and visit my website because there is more info about me. And most of
my invitations worked. Eventually you will get traffic from your
keywords and content placement on your website.
Yahoo or Google, for instance crawl your website content and rank it by importance of its topics and the matching keywords.
There is one really important issue with this topic. Do not use more than 20% of your time in measuring, advertising, marketing, and website building activities. Use 80% of your time to sell. Remember, you are selling yourself. Don't loose your focus on selling yourself and to find your ideal job.
This website business will take about 1 to 2, maybe 3 months before it will pick up and/or take off, if you have the content and keywords configured right. And that will happen without spending any money for advertising, fake traffic, keyword optimization, search engine optimization services, and/or rebuilding your website, spending thousands of dollars.
But the big but is, while I can testify to it that realistic money can be made to even replace your daytime job, don't expect to make more than $ 300 to a $500 after 4 months. If you are really good and you have a great website and good service, and the stars are aligned perfectly, you can make $ 2,000 to $ 5,000 a month easy. You will have to be on the phone a lot and you need to send out invitations by email daily, building your network.
Measure the relevancy of internet business and their ranking (Alexa Tool)
If there is "no rank", then the website is most likely not old enough
(3 months) to get a ranking. Some really great and high ranked websites
such as Yahoo have a ranking of 1, Google a ranking of 2, and eBay a
ranking of 20. 1and1 has a ranking in the 5,000's. Really good rankings have anything under 100,000. It is really difficult to get there.
But anyway, if you encounter anyone offering you service and or promises, and they have a ranking of 5,000,000 or so, think please twice before you spend your money. And by the way, you don't need to buy re-directed traffic to boost your ranking. It is not worth the money. And you don't need to boost your ranking by paying $ 250 or $ 500 for optimization of your website keywords and content every month. Of course this includes keyword placement on the sponsored side of Google (Pay Per Click).

Of course this includes keyword placement on the sponsored side of Google (Pay Per Click).
Also, I recommend you sign up with www.engineseeker.com. This will cost you $ 5.00 per month. This site offers Search Engine Optimization tools. Don't plan on using that and paying this site for other services than those that I recommend here:
Google crawls your website automatically every time you have updated it and re-launched it with the updates. The more often you update and add information / content, the more often Google will update its info about your website content. So, here it is: EngineSeeker can crawl your site for free. And that won't hurt you. 'You' should do that, but not for the crawling purpose but for the purpose of confirming that your keywords and website description are correct and are shown. There is a button that will allow you to optimize.
Go to the SEO tool and look for the area where to optimize your website keywords and description. Your description and keyword content can be too long or too short, or just perfectly ideal. As you modify these, on the bottom the system will make you the coding for the perfect metatag. This is if you have a website downloaded through an FTP site and hosted on a shared or even private dedicated or semi-dedicated server. If downloaded through the Website Builder on 1and1, you might just want to be interested to have the correct length of keywords and description.
Then you can pull down your competitor's website and put it in alongside your own and compare keywords. Check out your competitor's website on Google, looking for it with the keywords identified. (another way to see any website's keywords go to the top of the browser under "View" and drop down the menu. Click on "Page Source" or Control "U".
Make sure you compare and adopt only those keywords into your website that bring results. You can see results usually on Google's first page search results. When you put in a matching keyword to your content that is between 3 to 5 times within a given page and you find the website of your competitor on page one, you can expect to achieve the same, if not better, if you match what they did.
Visitor Feedback (short surveys)
You can build forms and surveys totally customized to your need on
1and1. This will allow you build your database. You want to have a
database of people visiting your website. This way you can send them
hopefully a newsletter. This activity takes finesse. I have not been
able to be very successful yet. Even if you have a give-away or free
something associated to it, people are currently suspicious of free
things. This is because the internet is totally saturated and
over-blasted with spam and free offers.
One word of advice: Just like selling yourself to the next ideal and preferred employer, give them something that interests them and drives them to contact you. Don't tell them everything. Just tell your visitors enough about your expertise that they trust you and want to know more. They will contact you!
Send newsletters (emailing with your own IP Addresses)
Write and publish articles with embedded URL/Links to your Website
And that leads to the next and best topic. If you like writing or not,
it does not matter. You can purchase finished articles online if you
have enough money. Or you can write them yourself and embed your
website link into the article. Then launch it with for instance with an
article publisher. Yes there are places that cost more money than you
might want to spend. But if you can afford it, these embed links on only one article
published in 2000 different locations, will build your external and
non-reciprocal links.
Please, don't go and spend money on buying links. You will quickly spend hundreds of dollars on these. And as a consequence you will also get a lot of emails where you have to confirm each and every placement. I bought 3000 of these link placements. From those that accepted my website, I had to click 'accept' about 2000 times after having to enter their specific website. You can of course buy for more money an automated system. Bottom line, I have never seen a real advantage of having these illegitimate links of which you really have no way of knowing where they end up and whether they are really placed
Reciprocal Links are links placed on a specific website of interest in exchange of placing it also on your own website. This is a good starting point, yet time consuming, to get a network of external links. But Google will rank your site higher for one-way links placed by someone in their own website because they did it out of own interest and without any conditions associated to it. And believe me, the mathematicians at Google are smart. They have figured out a way of knowing.

Traffic Purchase
You can buy traffic. I don't recommend it. It is only a temporary website traffic build up. You will be able to measure it online and see the traffic and get really psyched about it. Hurray I had 1000 visitors today. But ask yourself, did they make you money, and did you get your job? Plus they are difficult to measure.
Companies will send you traffic through different ways. Not all of this traffic is registered in your traffic statistics tool(s). Often you just have to take the organization's word for it.
LinkeIn will also launch you up on top in the search engine search results. And so will Wikipedia. Wikipedia is little tricky to get linked too in respect to help building your traffic that buys and makes you money. And then there are few more of these really crazy creative marketing ideas, which I will gladly send to you in a newsletter.
Again, and as a final word, be cautious with spending money and trusting advertising online. I know you will have lots of questions, probably more now than before reading this information. That is all the fun in learning.

RE: Is PPC really an effective method to get valuable traffic to your site?
========
My experience has been that there's definitely a
place for PPC. However, there a numerous other performance-based
advertising channels / methods, such as affiliate marketing and
numerous remnant buys. As George points out you need to have SEO and
PPC strategies. In fact, about 85% of the clicks generated by Google
are from the organic search listings, so at the end of the day the
volume of search-generated traffic does not come from PPC.
What I've found works well is to focus your paid search on your products that you offer a compelling value proposition / competitive advantage with, and are competing in large markets when you have a sizable growth opportunity, integrating PPC as part of multi-channel campaigns to drive volumes / cost-efficiencies and develop a annual plan based on seasonality.
When implementing PPC, remember it's not only about the bidding to get placement, it's also about your "Quality Score," which is driven by the landing page or other content your PPC is linking to.
_________________________________________________________________
PPC doesn't necessarily require a large budget. The most effective strategy may involve targeting terms for which there is currently less competition.
This being said, SEO (results of which are not as immediate as PPC) is going to be most cost effective esp with a smaller budget.
Search for a company that specializes in this and is legit. For example, look at whom your host may have an Affiliate relationship with.
Best of luck.
_________________________________________________________________
My experience is that even a low budget can give you incredible market intelligence (such as how intense competition is, which keywords are the ones people search against and therefore to optimize your site for). It is up to you to monitor the number of leads you get over the period of the campaign and work out if it pays back.
Interestingly, although Google states that the budget you spend does not affect your natural listing, when I have analyzed the backwards links of my sites, they include places where Google has advertised us, which makes me think there is an indirect benefit.
If you spend a great deal Google will optimize your account - then you really pick up a few useful tips...

Thomas, if I were you I'd take a step back and see whether I really it PPC. There are many factors to take into account: what's the nature of your business? What online traffic would add value to you? What's your annual revenue and marketing budget? And many other questions...
$1,000 could be extremely high or extremely low, depending on different circumstance. You shouldn't look at it in isolation, that's my only advice.

Let me give a small example of mine. Earlier i was working on SEO for a real estate website. There is good traffic for the website but no conversions/sales for about 6months. Now after such a long period of time we started getting some sales to it. The reason for poor or no sales for that period of time is the down turn in the Real Estate Market all over the world. So sometimes there may be some bad time coming in. All we need to do is never stop our efforts, keep doing the work, you will be rewarded for sure. The thing i am trying to point out here is that there will be some global factors too which will effect on yours website sometimes. Keep in mind the products/services which you are selling and do business accordingly.
I don't suggest to you to go for a SEO school. Its not going to fetch much for you. Better you read some good blogs/forums/articles on SEO to enhance your knowledge and keep communicating with SEO/SEM Experts. This may fetch you some results.
However i have achieved some good results in SEO & PPC over the period of time. Will try to assist you. You can connect with me.
